25th Krakow Theatrical Reminiscences
- International Festival of Alternative Theatres
The Festival is the oldest festival of alternative theatres in Poland; this year it will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Since its earliest days the organisers aimed at the presentation of the widest possible cross-section of the best OFF stage performances of the previous season. Reminiscences reflect the rhythm of the time as described by the theatre this Festival promotes. The festival is an important place for the Polish alternative to engage the dialogue, and assess its searches and quests. This is an exchange of ideas of technical experience, an attempt at defining the role of the artist in the contemporary world. The elements of this year’s Festival will be: Alternative Europe, The Second Oberiu Day and the Action Market in the Centrum Handlowe Zakopianka.
The Alternative Europe project was launched last year with the session and presentations concentrating on the theme of politics and theatre. Among the companies performing this year we will see the Turkish Tiyatro Ti with the Neverending Story: a production directed by a Pole, Andrzej Sadowski and discussing a very delicate theme, namely, the Kurdish question. The KTO will present Zapach czasu (Scent of Time) - an open-air production focusing on powers, authority, politicians, and social manipulation.
The core of the Stuffiness - Soulness - Spirituality (Zaduch-Duszność-Duchowość) festival is the presentation of those spectacles which describe or define the situation of independent theatre at the threshold of the new millennium. The productions presented this year will concentrate on portraying the crucial forms of contemporary strife for human identity. The Stuffiness (Zaduch) series will focus on post-industrial productions: resorting to caustic satire, they mock the dreams of the hi-tech world. Among the companies we will see, there will be: Komuna Otwock with The First God Must Be Killed (Trzeba zabić pierwszego Boga), The Cogitatur Theatre with The Homage to Expressionists (W hołdzie ekspresjonistom), the Porywacze Ciał with the Vol. 7, the Teatr Novego Fronta from Prague with Leaden Mist (Ołowiana mgła), and the Unia Teatr Niemożliwy with Toporland - a suite for cardboard and double bass.
The protagonists of the Soulness (Duszność) are the people who have not adjusted to the rules governing the free market: outsiders, economic immigrants, the unemployed, and people living on the edge. Within this series we will see such productions as A by the Usta Usta theatre, Biochemical - a tale from the life of a bacteria by the Łaźnia Association, the Joyful Life of a Fool (Radosny żywot głupka) Teatr Kreatury, the Beckett, not I by the Italian Aenigma theatre, and the Films (Filmy) by Alicja Żebrowska: scandalising works of the Krakow performance artist who tells the tale of the woman’s body and manipulations that are conducted on it.
Finally, the Spirituality (Duchowość) signposts the rescue route: return to the imperceptibly lost values. Among the works staged within the cycle will be Gifts of Artaban (Dary Artabana) by Piligrim, a Russian company who present an Easter mystery play based on 11th-century songs of the Orthodox Church and a legend of king Artaban IV. There will also be Customs (Zwyczaje), a production which has been perfected for years by the Sulza i Smiah theatre from Sofia (Bulgaria), Angel’s Wing (Skrzydło Anioła) by Leszek Mądzik who has after many years brought text and word back to his spectacles, The Crane (Żuraw) by the Teatr Snów, and Judases (Judasze) - an open-air action by Teatr Strefa Ciszy - a young Poznań ensemble...
The supplementation and complementation of the idea of Alternative Europe will be the Action Market (26th March). The idea is very much in line with the assumptions of alternative theatre, a theatre which has always followed the changes in customs and manners. As during the last few years, supermarkets became the places where free time is spent, alternative theatre - armed with the American experience - decided to follow the spectator. The Centrum Handlowe Zakopianka Shopping Mall will become the stage for mini-spectacles, concerts and actions of the Teatr Strefa Ciszy, Performer, Teatr Własny Stanisławiak and of the Łaźnia Association.
Among the events, there will be the Second Oberiu Day concentrating on the productions of spectacles alluding to works of the Oberiu artists or based directly on them. Thus we will see the Pif, Paf, Puf by the Witkacy Theatre from Zakopane, Three Left Hours by the Daska Theatre from Croatia - a spectacle whose title alludes to the first evening of poetry, magic, and theatre that the Oberiutes held, and the Symphonic Vaseline 1917 (Symfoniczna Wazelina 1917) by the Ludowy Theatre. At the same time the former Wedding Palace will become the stage of the Oberiu House (Dom oberiu), directed by Michał Chludziński and Łukasz Czuj.
Among the productions accompanying the Reminiscences, the staging of Kisses by the Hungarian KOMPmA Theatre from Budapest is worth a notice.
Another event worth remembering will be held on Saturday, 25th March: the concert of the Kapela Niewiernego Tomasza and the Kapela will begin a sensational all-night party.
Polish and English language catalogues and publications related to the Festival will be available.
