The Crossroads Festival

Towards the end of July, the Main Market Square Rynek will fill with colourful crowds, transferred directly from the centuries past: this will, however, not be an instance of time travel. This will be the Crossroads (Rozstaje) Festival of Traditional Music - an homage paid to the still live tradition whose roots reach the huge cultural community of the Carpathian and sub-Carpathian peoples who, though living only a few hundred kilometres away, have often been separated by almost unsurpassable barriers. There was a time when most of those peoples lived in Galicia, a part of the Dual Austro-Hungarian Empire, and today they live in Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. Present among them are also the representatives of those national minorities which have either been decimated or systematically severed from the roots during the last century: Lemkos, Boikos, Gypsies, and Jews. It becomes obvious that the inheritance of Galicia passed on to the widely-perceived Ma³opolska region becomes the continuation of the most ancient traditions and customs in all their variety; pursuing those, one must, nevertheless, be aware of the interrelations and kinship between those and the culture of the neighbouring countries: these are the very links that are emphasised by the Crossroads Festival, organised as a part of the Krakow 2000 Festival.
